WHO WE SERVE

Our Residents...

Our residents include restaurant employees, construction workers, housekeepers, college grads, teachers, and retirees relying on social security. AHC’s thousands of residents reflect the vibrant, diverse population that has shaped the Washington-Baltimore region for decades. All share a common need for an affordable, secure, and convenient, high-quality place to live.

Who qualifies for affordable housing?

AHC primarily serves families who earn between 30% and 60% of the Area Median Income. Area Median Income, or AMI, is the middle income in a given area and is the measurement that qualifies families and individuals for affordable housing.

In Arlington, for example, the median family income for a family of four was $142,300 in 2022. To qualify for AHC’s housing, a family of four can earn up to $85,380 (60% of AMI). Similarly, a single person can earn up to $59,820. Although HUD guidelines suggest a family should not spend more than 30% of its annual income for housing, that is often unrealistic for many families living in a region as expensive as the mid-Atlantic.
