Last Wednesday on "TODAY with Jenna & Friends," AHC volunteer Aliyah was recognized for her nonprofit, One Word Reading Initiative, which earned her the prestigious Daily Point of Light Award earlier this year.
Through the One Word Reading Initiative, Aliyah has helped hundreds of children living in AHC communities build at-home libraries filled with diverse, multi-level books — nurturing a love of reading.
During the segment, young AHC residents shared their excitement about receiving books, and AHC’s own Laney Parrott spoke about the lasting impact of Aliyah’s initiative. And in a heartwarming surprise, Scholastic announced a donation of $10,000 worth of books to support Aliyah’s initiative.
After the segment aired, students at the Gates of Ballston Rinker Community Center — where the feature was filmed — gathered for a special watch party, complete with ice cream. Seeing themselves on screen made the moment even more exciting.
Join us in celebrating Aliyah and her passion for empowering young readers. Check out this behind-the-scenes video and see the students' reactions to seeing the segment.
