AHC Inc.’s purpose is to produce, preserve, manage, advocate for and finance affordable rental and owner-occupied housing. AHC provides housing services in the mid-Atlantic region to low- and moderate-income families and individuals. As an extension of our rental housing program, AHC offers educational services to strengthen our residents’ economic and social stability.
AHC opened its doors as a nonprofit developer of affordable housing in Arlington, VA, in 1975. As housing costs have risen dramatically throughout the mid-Atlantic region, AHC has grown to serve not only Arlington, but also the Baltimore area and several other Virginia counties.
The housing challenge continues to grow. In 2009, Arlington County estimated that more than 10,000 affordable rental units were lost in Arlington during the previous seven years -- a 50 percent drop.
AHC is working hard to stem the tide. Since 1975, AHC has developed and preserved 38 affordable rental apartment communities, providing quality homes for more than 4,500 households.

Over the years, AHC has learned that it takes more than bricks and mortar to build a successful future. Many of our residents face myriad challenges – economic, social, transportation, language difficulties – and struggle just to make ends meet.
AHC's award-winning Resident Services program is helping hundreds of residents better meet these challenges. Our updated, vibrant community centers are hubs of activities with after-school programs, teen tutoring, workshops for seniors, and English language classes. These programs are making a real difference in the lives of more than 2,000 children and adults.
AHC offers opportunities to help low- and moderate-income families realize their dream of homeownership. We offer affordable homes to purchase, low-interest grants and loans for home renovations, grants for emergency repairs, and funds to help physically challenged homeowners improve the accessibility of their homes.
Our home improvement and homeownership programs have helped more than 1,000 families rehabilitate and repair their aging homes, assisted 300 families in buying their first home, and built more than 50 new affordable homes.
